5 Day Devotional:“Tearing the Roof Off: Five Days of Faith and Hope”

Day 1: The Transforming Power of Faith
Reading: Mark 2:1-12 (ESV)
1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Devotional:
The story of the paralytic man being lowered through the roof demonstrates the incredible power of faith. Not just the faith of the paralyzed man, but the faith of his friends who went to extraordinary lengths to bring him to Jesus. Their determination and belief that Jesus could help led to a miraculous healing and forgiveness of sins.
Today, reflect on your own faith. Are you willing to "tear the roof off" to bring others to Jesus? Consider who in your life needs to encounter Christ's healing presence. Pray for the courage and creativity to overcome obstacles in sharing your faith. Remember, your faith can be the catalyst for someone else's transformation.
Response:
  • Identify one person you can pray for and intentionally move closer to Jesus today.
  • Share a story of God’s faithfulness with someone who needs encouragement.
Prayer:
“Lord Jesus, give me faith like these four friends—faith that refuses to quit. Help me see the people around me who need You. Give me courage and creativity to overcome any obstacle to bring them to You. Use my faith to spark transformation in others. Amen.”

Day 2: God's Unfailing Love in Our Brokenness
Reading: Romans 5:6-11 (ESV)
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Devotional:
The transcription emphasizes God's overwhelming love for us, even in our sinful state. Christ's sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate demonstration of this love. As Paul writes, "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Take time today to meditate on the depth of God's love for you. Reflect on areas in your life where you feel unworthy or broken. Allow the truth of God's unconditional love to penetrate those places. How might fully embracing God's love change the way you view yourself and others? Consider how you can extend this same love to someone in your life who is struggling.

Response:
  • Write down one area of brokenness where you need to believe God’s love deeply.
  • Intentionally show Christlike love to someone who feels unworthy today.

Prayer:
“Father, thank You for loving me when I was still Your enemy. Help me to fully embrace Your love in the broken places of my life. Transform my heart so I can extend that same grace and love to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Day 3: The Call to Be Witnesses
Reading: Acts 1:6-8 (ESV)
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Devotional:
Jesus' final command to His disciples was to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. This call extends to all believers today. We are meant to be active participants in sharing the good news of Christ's love and salvation.
Ponder your role as a witness for Christ. Are you actively sharing your faith with others? Think about your "one more"—that person in your life who needs to know Jesus. How can you be intentional about praying for them and looking for opportunities to share your faith? Ask God for boldness and wisdom in being His witness in your daily life.
Response:
  • Identify your “one more” and commit to pray for them daily this week.
  • Share your testimony or a simple gospel truth with someone today.
Prayer:
“Holy Spirit, empower me to be a bold witness for Jesus. Open doors for conversations and give me wisdom to speak with love and truth. Help me see every moment as an opportunity to point people toward Christ. Amen.”

Day 4: Hope in the Midst of Suffering
Reading: Romans 8:18-25 (ESV)
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Devotional:
Life often brings pain and suffering, but as believers, we have a hope that transcends our current circumstances. Paul reminds us that our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us.
Reflect on areas of struggle or suffering in your life. How can the promise of future glory change your perspective on these challenges? Consider how your hope in Christ can be a testimony to others who are going through difficult times. Pray for strength to persevere and for opportunities to share the reason for your hope with those around you.
Response:
  • Write a journal entry about how God’s promise of future glory encourages you today.
  • Encourage someone who is suffering by sharing Romans 8:18-25 with them.
Prayer:
“Lord, thank You for the hope that outshines my suffering. Help me fix my eyes on the glory to come. Strengthen me to persevere and let my hope in Christ encourage others around me. Amen.”

Day 5: Experiencing God's Presence
Reading: Psalm 139:1-18 (ESV)
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. 13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.

Devotional:
The transcription emphasizes the importance of recognizing God's presence in our lives. This beautiful psalm reminds us that God is intimately acquainted with every aspect of our being and is always with us.
Today, focus on becoming more aware of God's presence in your daily life. How might your actions, thoughts, and interactions change if you were constantly mindful of God's presence? Take time to praise God for His intimate knowledge and care for you. Ask Him to help you live with a greater awareness of His presence and to use that awareness to draw others to Him.
Response:
  • Spend ten minutes today in silence, simply acknowledging God’s presence.
  • Write down three ways you saw God’s hand at work in your life this week.
Prayer:
“Father, thank You for knowing me completely and loving me fully. Help me to live aware of Your constant presence. Let that awareness shape my thoughts, words, and actions so that others are drawn to You. Amen.”
