Awakened By the Word Message 2 Notes
Sermon Notes from Awakened Part 2 (As Promised)
1. The Word Is a Person Before It Is a Book
John 1:1–4, 14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
The Bible does not begin by defining the Word as ink on a page but as a Person.
Truth From This:
Jesus is not a messenger of God’s Word.
Jesus is God’s Word.
This means:
God’s ultimate self-expression and self-revelation is Jesus Christ.
The written Word exists to reveal, testify to, and lead us into relationship with Him.
Luke 24:27
“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Every page of Scripture is Christ-centered.
When we read Scripture, we are not studying ideas but we are encountering a Person.
2. The Written Word Is God Making Himself Known
Hebrews 1:1–2
1Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
God’s Word is God speaking, not God talking about Himself.
That means Scripture is:
God revealing His mind
God unveiling His heart
God disclosing His will
God inviting us into relationship
2 Timothy 3:16–17
“All Scripture is breathed out by God…”
The Word comes from the very breath of God.
What came from His breath still carries His life.
This is why reading Scripture is not informational but it is relational.
3. To Engage the Word Is to Engage the Living God
Hebrews 4:12–13
12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Notice what Scripture does:
It reads us
It reveals us
It exposes us
It heals us
The Word is alive because:
It flows from a living God
It is energized by the Holy Spirit
It carries divine authority and presence
John 6:63
“The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
When Jesus speaks, life is released.
When we read Scripture by faith, that same life is encountered.
4. The Word Is a Means of Communion, Not Just Instruction
John 15:7
7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Jesus connects:
Abiding in Him
With His words abiding in us
That means You cannot separate intimacy with Christ from devotion to His Word.
Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
The Word doesn’t just inform decisions but it guides daily life.
Psalm 119:130
“The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding.”
Understanding here isn’t academic, it is spiritual illumination.
5. The Word Transforms, Not Just Informs
James 1:21–22
“Receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
The Word:
Is implanted, not skimmed
Saves, restores, renews the inner person
Works transformation from the inside out
Romans 12:2
“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”
The Word doesn’t just give new thoughts but it renews the mind, reshaping:
Desires
Values
Convictions
Vision
John 17:17
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
The Word:
Sets us apart
Purifies us
Aligns us with God’s holiness
6. The Word Is How Faith Is Born and Sustained
Romans 10:17
“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Faith doesn’t come from:
Emotion
Effort
Willpower
Faith comes from God speaking and the Word is where He speaks most clearly and consistently.
7. The Word Is the Primary Way God Dwells With Us Daily
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
God does not want His Word to:
Visit occasionally
Be referenced occasionally
He wants it to dwell in us and to make a home in us.
Psalm 1:1–3
The one who meditates on the Word:
Is rooted
Is fruitful
Is stable
Is nourished
God desire the Word to become the environment of the soul and the foundational influence of your heart.
